Projects can also take on a singular focus such as concept exploration. In this instance, I was a freelance  designer and a part of the design team at Essential. We provided design services to our client and worked directly with the client's in-house Design Manager and Engineering Team. Our role was to provide a design solution and then transition it to the client for production development.

Under cabinet lighting and outlet systems add visibility and functionality to enhance your countertop space. However, it's not always neat and clean in appearance, may not add the specific functionality you are looking for and the spaces are convoluted and varied at best. The adorne system by Legrand changes that for the better, by defining new opportunities and considering things from a consumer perspective.

To kick off the project, we worked with Legrand's design and engineering teams to study and understand Legrand's core technology and the competitive landscape. Grasping a good understanding of what was available and what was missing in the market place allowed the team to clearly define some areas of opportunity to target for development.

Understanding the range of kitchen spaces and the context of use for this product proved enlightening and informative. We assembled a basic questionnaire and requested some photos from our interview subjects to quantify some real environmental contexts to develop concepts around.

Measurements. photos and interview questions helped to quantify the context of use. Challenges for cord management, number of available electrical outlets, lighting issues, and unmet user needs became apparent through our investigation.

There were often multiple concepts on each configuration. Each one explored connectivity, installation, navigation around obstacles and location under the cabinet.

Module unit length was a key contrast element between concepts. Finding rhythm in module length to minimize number of individual units required while maintaining ease of assembly for multiple features was a balancing act.

Shorter module units allowed for more manufactured customized SKUs and less on-site assembly of modules, but longer install times due to number of pieces.

Methods of distribution of power through the system affected configuration and assembly concepts. Creating clean lines and minimizing surface clutter were important to achieving system success.

Access to power for multiple counter-top appliances and cord management concepts for all those power cords were considered throughout the development process.
